A fabulous condition officers lance cap from the Regiment of Lancers that was in existence for the least amount of time amongst all of the British lancer regiments. The correct title for the 21st Lancers is the Empress of India, initially raised in 1858 and amalgamated with the 17th Lancers in 1922, its most famous Battle Honour was Kartoum for the Battle of Omdurman in 1898 , which the charge of the regiment complete with lances exactly cavalry style involved no lesser personages than Lieutenant Winston Churchill, who in that battle carried a Mauser semi automatic pistol. Of the 400 men involved in the charge 70 were killed and wounded and the regiment won three Victoria Crosses in that battle. The Battle Honour Khartoum. This particular example Victorian Crown, without the Battle Honour telling us that the helmet was purchased prior to 1898 without the Battle Honour for Khartoum. The powder blue mortarboard top completely free of any moth, complete with its correct VR powder blue and gold bullion boss. All of the gilt lace good and bright. Some crazing to the rabbit skin body. Complete with its full length chin chain, its interior leather sweatband and inner deep red close on maroon inner silk lining material with the gold blocked name of the manufacturer of ‘Cater & Co, 56 Pall Mall, London’ to the upper inner mortarboard area. The helmet is also complete with its correct white feather plume and its correct officers plume holder. Accompanying the tunic is the 21st Lancers officers plastron fronted tunic, identical powder blue facings to the top of the mortarboard of the helmet. Missing its officers collar badges. All lace good, complete with shoulder boards, one rank star to either epaulette indicating the rank of lieutenant. The majority of the buttons to the tunic are Victorian, there are however some replacement King George V crown buttons. No moth, all lacework good and bright, complete with its officers waist girdle. The tunic is named ‘J.H.Evans Esquire’ with the tailors of ‘Hawkes & Co Piccadilly’. Complete with a set of cavalry pattern trousers.
