An incredibly rare uniform of the Third Reich period being the all black uniform for an officer from the rank of Untersturmfuhrer . The tunic being a private purchased tunic in the finest quality grained black material constructed in the classic form of an Allgemeine SS tunic. Two upper patch pockets with pleats, two lower angled pockets with hidden bags, deep turned back cuffs, four button closure, open collar wear with a skirted back copied from the German tunic of WWI the M.15. The right hand side collar patch worn is for the rank of SS Untersturmfuhrer, aluminium twisted cord collar edging with matching collar edging to both collar patches, the left hand patch being the Totenkopf Deaths Head patch in heavy bullion wire, the Untersturmfuhrer’s collar patch with three pips, correct rank appropriate shoulder board fitted with a screw in post, Standard Allgemeine armband in high quality red wool, minor stains to the upper part of the white circlet behind the swastika. To the lower right hand sleeve as the tunic is viewed the beautiful quality RZM wire weave ‘Ostmark’ cuff title. To the upper right breast there are loops for two separate awards. To the interior of the tunic a hole has been tailored through the lower left hand pocket as the tunic is worn with a satin strip of material with a D ring attached for the clipping of the dagger or sword. Accompanying the tunic are a pair of the Allgemeine SS straight leg parade trousers with white stripe to the side. A superb uniform overall, no moth damage or staining, trousers in the exact matching material as the tunic. The SS Totenkopf Verbande were instituted in March 1933 shortly after the Third Reich was created, there were initially five Sturmbanne battalions but more were further extended, all units wore the Deaths Head insignia to the right collar patch in either unnumbered form or numbered depending on the unit. Their duties were mainly security and concentration camp administration. When Austria was annexed in 1938 The Reichsfuhrer SS ordered the establishment of SS Totenkopf Standarte 4 Ostmark, formed on the 1st April 1938 and were garrisoned at the concentration camp of Mauthausen close to Linz in Austria.
